Announcements: keep Discord and VRChat in sync

Most communities announce things twice: once in Discord, once as a VRChat group post. Announcements sync does the second one for you, and can bring VRChat posts back into Discord as well. You choose the direction per server, and nothing syncs until you do.

The three ways a Discord message becomes a VRChat post

  1. Mention LogDog in the sync channel. Post in the channel you picked in Settings and include @LogDog anywhere in the message. A thread under a sync channel counts as that channel. Works today, no extra Discord permission needed.
  2. Mention a trigger role in the sync channel. If your server already has an announcements role people ping (say @Announcements), pick it as a trigger role and the same messages post to VRChat. This path needs Discord's Message Content permission for LogDog, which is under review; until it is approved, use one of the other two.
  3. Right-click any message, open Apps, and choose Post announcement to VRChat. Works in any channel, and you choose whether members get a notification.

Only people who may announce can trigger a post: server administrators, plus any role you grant with /permissions grant announcements @role. Other members mentioning the role or LogDog are ignored.

LogDog stays quiet in the channel

The announcements channel is your members' feed, so LogDog never replies in it. When a message posts to VRChat, LogDog adds a check reaction to it. When a message cannot post (no text left once mentions are removed, no permission, sync turned off), the author gets a DM saying why, with a link back to the message. If their DMs are closed, the note goes to your notification channel instead. Setup hints and approval previews go to the notification channel too, never the announcements channel.

What gets posted

The message text, translated to plain text: mentions become names, channel and role mentions become their names, custom emoji are dropped, and Discord formatting (bold, spoilers, code, quotes) is stripped. The first line becomes the post title; a one-line message becomes the title alone, so it is not shown twice. VRChat shows the post under LogDog's group account, so the text ends with Posted by via Discord. Images and attachments are not carried over yet.

Edits and deletes

  • Edit the Discord message and the VRChat post follows within a few seconds. Only the author can edit their message, and the edit is applied only while they may still announce (an admin, or a holder of the announcements role). A message that was announced through the right-click menu does not follow edits: the person who wrote it is not the announcer. While a post is waiting for approval, edits are ignored so the approver gets what they saw.
  • Delete the Discord message and LogDog deletes the VRChat post it made, if the mirror deletes setting is on (it is by default). Deleting a message that was announced through the right-click menu leaves the VRChat post alone; remove it from the dashboard. Bulk deletes and channel purges are ignored on purpose: VRChat keeps the durable record.
  • If someone edits LogDog's post inside VRChat, that post is detached: later Discord edits no longer apply to it, so nobody's fix gets overwritten.

VRChat posts in Discord

With VRChat to Discord or Both directions on, every post made in VRChat (by anyone other than LogDog) is mirrored into the announcements channel you pick, as an embed with the text (shown as plain text, so links and formatting from VRChat are never rendered as clickable), the poster's name, the image if there was one, and an optional role ping. Edits in VRChat update the embed; a post deleted in VRChat is marked Removed in VRChat but the Discord message is never deleted. Posts limited to specific VRChat roles are recorded in your history but not mirrored.

The Announcements page

The dashboard's Announcements page is the history: every announcement your server has seen, from VRChat and from LogDog, with the state of each copy (posted, pending, needs attention, removed) and the reason when something did not go through. From here you can also:

  • Write a new announcement and publish it to VRChat, to the Discord announcement channel, or both, now or scheduled for a later time. An optional image (an https link) shows below the text on the Discord post; VRChat posts cannot carry an image from LogDog.
  • Edit an announcement LogDog made, remove it (LogDog takes its copies down; the history keeps the row), or approve one that is waiting.

The range pills above the list show the last 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days on the free plan; Premium unlocks 90 days and all time. Nothing is ever deleted, so upgrading reveals the whole history.

How many announcements LogDog will post

Each server gets a cap on the announcements LogDog creates, counted across the dashboard, @LogDog mentions, trigger roles, and the right-click menu. Posts made in VRChat itself are never counted. Free servers get 4 per hour and 10 per day; Premium raises that to 12 and 40. The Announcements page and the settings card show how much is used. Past the cap, LogDog tells the author when it resets, and posts nothing until then.

Settings

On the dashboard, open Settings and expand Announcements. The card has three boxes.

Applies to every announcement covers what LogDog posts however it started: the VRChat post visibility and the roles to ping. LogDog Dashboard Announcement Settings is all you need if you only post from the dashboard: pick the Discord announcement channel and writing an announcement there posts to both places without any sync direction. Discord ⇄ VRChat Announcement Syncing is optional and covers the automatic triggers and the mirroring of VRChat posts; each direction's own settings appear once that direction is on.

Setting What it does
VRChat post visibility Group members (default) or public, for every post LogDog creates in VRChat.
Roles to ping Up to five roles mentioned above each announcement LogDog posts in Discord, when it carries a notification.
Discord announcement channel Where dashboard announcements and mirrored VRChat posts go in Discord.
Direction Off, Discord to VRChat, VRChat to Discord, or both. Governs the automatic triggers and mirroring only. The two VRChat-to-Discord options need a Discord announcement channel first.
Sync channel The one Discord channel where @LogDog or a trigger role mention posts to VRChat. Threads under it count.
Trigger roles Up to five roles whose mention in the sync channel triggers a post. Bot and integration roles cannot be picked: Discord does not let anyone mention them, and picking a bot from the @ menu mentions the bot's user, not its role.
Notify members Whether synced posts send a VRChat notification (on by default). The Apps menu and the composer ask per post.
Ask for approval Hold synced posts until an authorized person clicks Post to VRChat on the preview LogDog posts in your notification channel (off by default; needs a notification channel, which cannot be cleared while this is on). The held message gets an hourglass reaction that turns into a check when approved and goes away when dismissed.
Mirror deletes Whether deleting the Discord message deletes the VRChat post LogDog made (on by default).

LogDog's group role needs the Manage Announcements permission in VRChat to create posts, Send Messages plus Embed Links in the Discord channels it posts to, and Add Reactions in the sync channel for the check mark.
